William Jay Yankaitis, known by his friends as Billy, 62, of Machesney Park, died October 23, 2019 in his home, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Born the second of four siblings on June 16, 1957 in Rockford to Thomas Johin and Mary Lou (Liebich) Yankaitis. ? Bill was a mischievous and energetic child, always preferring to be outside and active, or caring for various pets, including rabbits, large snakes, and exotic fish, for which he would build huge aquariums. He was a graduate of Rockford West High School, where he lettered in swimming. Summers were spent on the water fishing, swimming, and skiing at Lake Ripley, near Cambridge, Wisconsin. Here his lifelong passion for fishing was born under the tutelage of his favorite fishing buddy, his Dad. Here, too, yearly chores instilled skills and a work ethic that later served him in the construction industry. A member of Laborer’s Local 32, Bill worked many years for Mark Fridley Construction. Bill was known for his ability to make anyone laugh, sometimes by just being Bill. His sense of humor, booming voice, sparkling blue eyes and great smile will be missed by family and friends alike. Raising his children on a farm with his former wife Patty Yankaitis, allowed Bill to pass on his love of all things rural and wild. He would take the family camping with the horses as well as spend time at Willow Beach. Bill had a favorite farm occupant, Spike the mule, who patiently carried Bill on many trail rides. Bill enjoyed hunting/fishing and cooking his bounty. In later years he treated lucky friends to homemade jerky and other smoked delicacies. Survivors include his children Amanda S of Beloit, WI and Jacob W Yankaitis of Rockton, IL; siblings Thomas Joseph, Michael James, and Susan Mary Yankaitis; and nieces Jennifer L Yankaitis Hanner (Bill) and Justina L Wiersholm and nephews Nicholas D and Nathan T Yankaitis (Kayla) and Lars O Wiersholm. He is preceded in death by his parents. A Celebration of Life will be held from 3-7pm Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the American Legion, 221 W Main Street, Rockton, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a photo and story about William. Stateline Cremations of Loves Park is assisting the family.
