In loving memory of our fiercely independent matriarch of the family, Vonna J. Kusiciel, who passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2024, at the age of 69.
Her loss leaves a profound void in our hearts, but her legacy of love, strength, and wisdom will forever guide and inspire us.
Vonna was born and raised in Loves Park, Illinois and graduated from Harlem High School, class of 1973. She was a member of the pom-pom squad and was known for her beautiful red hair and feisty attitude throughout her life. She married Steven Kusiciel on July 4th, 2006, her favorite holiday. A few years after Steven’s death, she fulfilled her bucket-list item of traveling to Ireland. Here, she snapped a picture of herself capturing the sunset in order to keep it forever in her memory. She was a medical office manager for many years before transitioning to Chrysler, retiring in 2020.
Vonna's legacy extends far beyond her role within our family. She was the neighborhood “Snow White” and was known to feed all neighborhood cats, often taking in strays to care for and rehome. Her dream was to move from her home in the city to the country in order to open her own dog rescue and training business. Instead, she continued to take in way too many pets and enabled them to live their best lives. She was also a squirrel tamer, raccoon feeder, and bird watcher.
Vonna is survived by her children, Chad, Angela (Mary Kate), Charlene (Paul) and Sabrina (Ryan); her grandchildren and greatest joys, Taylor, Vash, Aislinn, Delaney and Silas; her siblings, Vicki, Bruce (Bonnie), Brad (Brenda) and many nieces and nephews; and a special mention to one of her cousins, partner-in-crime and best friend, Connie. She would also want to mention her most recent beloved pets: Gracie (recently passed over the rainbow bridge), Heidi (also, over the rainbow bridge), Winta, and Paddy Cakes. She is predeceased by her husband, Steven; her parents, Marion (“Tuff”) and Corinne (“Corky”); and Charity (infant twin daughter to Angela).
A celebration of Vonna's life will be held on Friday, May 10th, 2024, at Lino’s at 5:00pm, where family and close friends will gather to honor her memory and share stories of her remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, donation items for Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary can be brought and left for the family to deliver in Vonna's honor, continuing her legacy of compassion toward all animals (except spiders).
The family would like to extend their most heartfelt appreciation for the compassionate care received from Serenity Hospice and Home in Vonna’s last months of life. In particular to April, Jenny, Cori, and Dr. Kalweit. We hope you think of her anytime you hear wind chimes or have to visit grumpy patients before noon.
