Verna Maryann Jay, 91, of Rockford passed away on January 5, 2024. She was born on April 26, 1932, in Rockford; the daughter of Otto and Anna (Johanson) Axelson. Verna graduated from East High School in 1950. She worked as legal secretary until she was 87 years old for several attorneys in the area. She was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Verna liked to spend her time reading, and playing cards, especially pinochle. She enjoyed shopping, going to lunch with friends, and traveling. Verna was a very good listener and a good friend to many. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. Once you were her friend you were a friend for life.
Survivors include her daughters Gretchen Jay, Roberta Jay, and Marie (Kevin) Johnson; grandchildren Angela Bakunowicz, Teresa (Jeff) Jackson, Lauren (Adam) Russell, Lisa Jay, Brock and Bret Johnson; great grandchildren Ejay, Gia, and Mia Jackson. She is predeceased by her parents.
