Thomas “Tom” Richard Breen, 70 Rockford IL, passed away September 9, 2024, at Serenity Hospice and Home surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer. He was born on October 9,1953 in Springfield, IL to John “Jack” Breen & Mary Breen Brubaker. He attended East High School. Tom was a salesman for many years before becoming a rural postal carrier in Genoa, Illinois where he worked for 25 years. After retiring from the post office Tom worked part time at his favorite golf course, Swan Hills until he fell ill. Tom was a member of the Boone County Veterans Club and The American Lombardi Society. He enjoyed spending time with friends and storytelling. He liked watching the Cardinals win and the Cubs lose, but this last season the losing records set by the White Sox were fascinating to him. He was also a Bears fan. If you knew Tom, you knew his passion for golf was strong. He played every chance he got. For the past 25 years he golfed with the same group of friends at Swan Hills. He was the Swan Hills Course Champion for 2024. Tom, his brother John, and their father Jack hosted an annual three club golf outing for over 20 years. Tom’s quick wit and sense of humor always had his family and friends laughing and he was cracking jokes up until the end.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Sharon Breen; daughter, Erin Beto (Doug) and their children Bill and Nolan; daughter Mary Makris (Chris) and their children Amelia and Walter; son, Tommy Breen (Jana) and their children Milo, Fiona, and Lyla. Brothers John Breen, Michael Breen; sister, Melissa Smiley, her husband David who he thought of as a brother. Tom is also survived by many nieces and nephews; cousins; in- laws. and the mother of his children, his first wife, Cynthia Borcherts. Tom was predeceased in death by his mother, Mary Breen Brubaker, father Jack Breen, father-in-law Willard Hunt, and two brothers-in-law.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the VFW Club in Belvidere. 1310 West Lincoln Ave, Belvidere, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to either Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, IL or the family, as they are creating a memorial for Tom at Swan Hills Golf Course.
