Sydilra Mcgowian

Sydilra (Carter) McGowian, was born October 30, 1933, to Edward and Clara Carter in Hallsville, Texas. The family includes L.S., Roy, Charles, Lula, and Delena. Sydilra attended Weldon Elementary School and High School for 17 years, then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated from North Division High School. She met Rev. James L. McGowian, Sr. and was married January 28, 1953. They moved to Rockford in 1961 and worked with the Church of Christ on Morgan St., Henrietta, Kishwaukee, and then moved to Chicago to work with the Long Avenue Church of Christ. Sydilra was baptized at the age of 14. She attended Rockford Business College. She worked for Illinois Water Treatment Plant/ALCOA for 19 years. She then worked for a day care center and then retired. Sydilra’s words: “Thank you for the opportunity to work together in church. Your thoughtfulness, love, prayers, and letting me be a part of your family all these years.”

Sydilra is predeceased by her husband Rev. James L. McGowian, Sr.; parents Edward and Clara Carter; brothers L.S., Roy, and Charles; sisters Lula and Delena; uncles and aunts. She is survived by her 3 sons James Jr., Kenneth, and Thomas; niece Billie Joe and all other nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Michelle Young for personally taking care of their mother.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the Westside Church of Christ, 1523 Morgan St., Rockford, IL 61102, with Pastor Greg Ausler officiating.
