Suzanne Wahlstrom Smith: A Life Woven with Love and Home
It is with profound sadness, yet immense gratitude for a life richly lived, that we announce the passing of Suzanne Wahlstrom Smith on July 5, 2025, at the age of 95. She passed away peacefully at FairHaven Retirement Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 23, 1930, in Rockford, Illinois, Suzanne was the cherished second of three children to Milton and Astrid Wahlstrom. She truly was the matriarch of her family, a devoted caregiver and homemaker. Her homes, filled with mementos and family photos, reflected a long and meaningful life. Suzanne's incredible intelligence, strength, and resilience were evident to all.
A loving mother to five, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to five, Suzanne's thoughtfulness was unmatched. She never forgot a birthday, sending beautiful cards for every occasion, and attended countless family events.
Suzanne found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid knitter, passionate gardener, skilled cook, and talented seamstress. Her unwavering Christian faith guided her every step. She enjoyed listening to classical music and hosted lively gatherings for friends and neighbors.
Suzanne earned a master's degree in Special Education and taught elementary students in Rockford and New York City. She was a proud "Rockford East E-Rab", a lifetime member of the Swedish Historical Society and had been an active member of her PEO Chapter LU.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Smith, and her son, Milton (Mickey). She is survived by her sister, Sandi Hotchkiss; her children: Anne Sheppard, Leah Johansson, Jay Smith, and Anders Smith; her grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
