Susana Avila Gonzalez, 53, of Rockford, passed away on July 7, 2026, at UW Health, Swedish American Hospital. She was born on November 13, 1972, in Guantanamo, Cuba, the daughter of Misael Avila and Maritza Gonzalez.
Before coming to the United States in 2016, Susana worked in a hospital laboratory in Cuba. After settling in Rockford, she became a valued member of the custodial staff at Conklin Elementary School.
Susana was an exceptional cook who found great joy in preparing meals for those she loved. She was deeply devoted to her family and fiercely protective of her children, earning the affectionate title of their "Mama Bear." Intelligent, well-educated, and hardworking, Susana approached life with strength, kindness, and determination. She touched the lives of many through her generosity and unwavering love for her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Susana is survived her son Yancarlos Fresco; daughter Melissa Yandira Fresco; her mother Maritza Gonzalez; sisters Aymet and Karelia Avila Gonzalez; nieces and nephews; and extended family Deon and Bartolo Fresco, Sr. She is predeceased by her father Misael Avila.
