Susan M. Sherwood, 74, of Rockton, passed away in her home on December 24, 2023. She was born on April 14, 1949, in Evanston, IL; the daughter of Eben and Irma (Breitzman) Sherwood. Susan graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1967 and went on to graduate from Ray Vogue Interior Design School in 1971. Susan married Bruce Weigel on June 19, 1971, and they moved to California. It was there that she discovered her talent for picture framing while working for a small Picture Framing Studio in Ocean Beach. A few years later she took a five-year detour from picture framing, when presented with an opportunity to drive the monorail train and conduct hour long tours at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. There she also served as a zookeeper for baby ducks where she was affectionately known as the “Mother Ducker”. She also participated in the project for the preservation of the “endangered” California Condor. Following her time at the Wild Animal Park, she returned to interior design, working for the Nettle Creek Store until 1983, when they moved to Northville, Michigan. It was there she became the owner and sole proprietor of Sherwood Picture Framing and Antiques. Her special talent was creating “magazine worthy” rooms for clients and in her own home. Her father-in-law once remarked that her home, inside and out, was her “canvas” and so it was in every dimension. In 2000 they moved to Wayne, IL. There she continued her Custom Picture Framing business on their property. They immersed themselves in that special community by joining the Little Home Church, the Dunham Woods Riding Club and she participated in the Wayne Fox Hunt. This was perhaps the happiest time in her life.
Susan also had many hobbies. She was a prolific needle pointer, seamstress, photographer and gardener. Susan was an avid reader, and a student of history and genealogy. For fun and “relaxation”, she did the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink. Susan was a huge animal lover and had many pets over the years including a horse, two dogs, and “lots and lots” of cats. She had a wonderfully dry sense of humor. She particularly enjoyed the columnist Dave Barry and could often be found by herself laughing hysterically when reading his column. Among some of her unique experiences were getting a kiss from Shamu at Sea World in San Diego, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge in a Fast Attack Nuclear Submarine on her way to participating in “daily ops”, submerged off the coast of California, during a dependent’s cruise. She got to take a turn at steering the boat and listening to whales in Sonar. When newly engaged, Allen Drury, a friend of Bruce’s family, took the young couple to a dinner theatre in Washington D.C. where he arranged to have Jack Jones come to their table and sing to her. She also had a competitive streak, remembering gleefully when she caught a bigger fish than her Dad on Big St. Germaine Lake in Wisconsin where they spent many a summer.
Susan is survived by her loving husband Bruce; sister Holly (Chuck) Rasmussen; nieces Katie (Alex) Wilkes and Courtney (Matt) Zimmer; and great nieces and nephews Chase, Gavin, and Blair Wilkes, and Charlotte Zimmer. She was predeceased by her parents.
The family will have a private Celebration of Life at a later date. Stateline Cremations is assisting the family, 6204 Forest Hills Rd., Loves Park, IL. www.statelinecremations.com
