Russell A. Handt, 86, peacefully passed away in his home on January 30, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. Born May 3, 1938, in Belgrade, MN. Russ was a graduate of Rockford East High School in 1956. He joined the Marine Corp immediately after high school until 1961. He then joined the Rockford Fire Department, proudly serving for 26 years until retiring in 1988. Russ also had his own painting business, Handt Decorating. Was married to Judy (Hammack)

Handt. Married Shirley McClenthen on July 2, 2004. Russ and Shirley enjoyed many years of traveling and exploring, having visited 48 of 50 states together. Russ was a member of many clubs and societies including Navy Club, LLL Club, Baltic, Harmony, Blackhawk Athletic Club, White Eagles, VFW, Moose Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles for 50 years. He enjoyed bowling and had hundreds of trophies to prove it, traveling…also with hundreds of pictures to prove it, fishing, sailing at Pierce Lake, tubing down the Kishwaukee, spending time with his forever brothers from the fire department, having "board meetings" with Barry and Tom, and

listening to 8 tracks of Country & Western with Roger Miller being one of his favorites.

A true friend, beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, son, uncle. He is survived by wife Shirley Handt, daughters Debbie (Marianne Taylor) Handt, Leslie (Dirk) Morgan, Amy (Adam) Hansen, siblings Ron (Judy) Handt, Paulette (Don) Giacone, Harlan Handt, grandchildren Travis Young, Colton Young, Alyssa (Sam Woodson) Morgan, Alex (Cody) Eschen, Skyler Young, Bryan (Myranda) Lischka, Austin (Keegan) Andrews, Rylee Smith, Hannah Morgan, Preston Smith, many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and very special friends/brothers Barry (Diane) Fitz and Tom (Joan) Stockburger. Predeceased by dad and mom Paul and Myrtle Handt, brother Howard Miller, daughter Angie Montgomery, sister-in-law Judy Handt, nephew Ron Handt Jr.

A celebration of Russ' life will be held at LLL Club on 1515 9th Street in Rockford, IL from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8. Come celebrate the stories and memories you had with Russ, just as he would have wanted it.
