Robert Allen Smith, 68, of Poplar Grove, passed away in his home on March 22, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 17, 1955, in Harvard, IL; the son of Jesse and Evelyn (Blazer) Smith. He graduated from North Boone High School in 1973. Robert married Jennifer Creel on September 2, 1978, at the Capron United Methodist Church. Robert was the “Town Man” for several years in in the village of Capron. He took care of the water, sewer, and streets. He retired from Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center as the supervisor of maintenance. He was a volunteer firefighter for Capron Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, whether it was building decks, furniture, or frames for Jennifer’s artwork. He could fix anything, and he is quoted by saying “It’s no good the way it is”, so he would figure out how to fix it. He was an avid Bears, Nascar, and White Sox fan. He enjoyed watching bull riding, funny movies, and going to the Rockford Speedway with his son to watch the trailer demolitions. Robert loved to entertain and cook for his family. He cooked the holiday dinners and loved to have people over for a backyard barbeque. He had a wonderful sense of humor and when things got stressful, he would say “You gotta laugh, what else can you do? Cry?” Robert was a humble, kindhearted, selfless person. He was forgiving and dependable as well. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his loving wife Jennifer; children Amber Nicole Smith, Bryan Derek Smith, Clayton Erik Smith, and Zachary Dane Berndt; brother Kenneth (Carol) Smith; several nieces and nephews; his dog Xander; and cats Toffee and Hershey. He is predeceased by his parents; siblings Jesse, Donna, Ray, Judy, and Bill; and nephew Dustin Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 am, Friday, April 12, 2024 at Capron United Methodist Church, 250 W. North Street, Capron, IL 61012 with luncheon to follow. Stateline Cremations is assisting the family, 6204 Forest Hills Rd., Loves Park, IL 61111. www.statelinecremations.com
