Dick Marzano went home to be home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 13. Dick's life was a testimony to God's grace and love. Dick loved his family, friends and church with a compassionate heart and abundant humor. Family was first and foremost to Dick moving the young family eastward to northern Illinois to be near his sister's family while making a career change from schoolteacher to entrepreneur. The various businesses included a restaurant and an office supply company but were secondary to his family and church. Dick and Brenda dedicated their lives to following Jesus Christ shortly before moving to Illinois and attending Glad Tidings Church where many lifelong friendships developed. Through the various transitions of Glad Tidings merging with Windsor Heights and then relocating and becoming Journey Church, many of those friendships continued with more to follow.
While there were many memorable moments, a highlight was the annual summer bash at Dick and Brenda's house in Rockton on the river. The church family gathered for a party that often lasted from noon until midnight with unplanned fireworks. Each year's event inspired Dick to add a new feature to the property with an ever-expanding deck, pool, volleyball court, boat dock, and basketball court. Projects often involved one or both of his sons, Rich and Sean, where they learned many invaluable lessons beyond the mechanics of the work at hand.
Family was precious to Dick. He did not enjoy phone conversations save for his sister, Dolores, with whom he could spend two or more hours in conversation despite only living 30 minutes from each other. Holidays marked family gatherings with hours of laughter and many rounds of Pictionary. Friendships were central to Dick's life especially around the breakfast table or outings with groups of men for golfing and Promise Keepers events. The door was always open for friends to stop in without invitation or announcement. Dick will be fondly remembered for his love of family, firm friendships, honesty, humor, and many other qualities being passed down to future generations.
According to Dick's firm request, a funeral or memorial service will not be held. If you wish to remember or honor Dick in some tangible way, please consider making a donation to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, two charities he contributed to regularly. We also want to express our gratitude to Mercy Health's hospice team who helped the family through a few difficult months. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
