Marlon F. Pool, 67, passed away peacefully with his loved ones at his side on September 22, 2022 after battling multiple long term illnesses.
Marlon was born in Rockford, IL where he lived and worked his entire life. There he met the love of his life, Kimberly, with whom he married and spent 48 wonderful years together and had 3 beautiful children: Jared (Marcy) Pool, Nathan Pool, and Jessica (Richard) Mulnix. Marlon loved spending time with his family, especially as they grew with 3 beautiful granddaughters (Alivia, Ily and Emory).
Marlon enjoyed playing basketball with his sons and watching his daughter compete in dance competitions. He loved working around the house, especially in his yard, mowing with perfectly manicured straight lines or washing his cars so the sunshine he craved everyday would reflect into his generous smile of a job well done. He enjoyed traveling to different areas of the United States mostly to Oregon and Florida where two of his children currently reside.
He worked a majority of his professional career in healthcare management and finances. He worked at UIC College of Medicine where he enjoyed meeting and talking with medical students, some of whom would later become his doctors. For some years he traveled to downtown Chicago for work at Northwestern Memorial. He ended his professional career at OBGYN Associates.
A warrior throughout his life, Marlon was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2004 and underwent chemotherapy and a successful Stem Cell Transplant in August 2005. Some years later he discovered his liver was failing from NASH (Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis) and required a liver transplant to save his life. He, by the grace of God, received the gift of life in November of 2009. While he never found out who donated their organ, he spent each day grateful for this beautiful third chance at life. He spent many years in good health until one day he noticed his leg had gone cold and was rushed to the hospital for a limb saving procedure on his leg. He spent much of the next few months with doctors monitoring his vascular system until he eventually needed life saving stents in his heart. These, too, after some time would fail him and required him to need open heart surgery. Recovering from that was tough but he endured it gracefully. After some time, he required a below knee amputation due to poor blood flow and dialysis for failing kidneys, taxed from the aforementioned liver disease. Ultimately, his physical body could handle no more, and the proud warrior returned to his penultimate resting place having completed his final hero’s journey at OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center. The family would like to thank all the many caregivers at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center Critical Care Unit and 4 East for the love and care they provided him in his last days. Marlon also had a special relationship with the hospital staff at UW-Madison Hospital & Clinics that monitored many of his lifelong health challenges beyond OSF’s capabilities. He always enjoyed cracking a joke with his nurses and doctors wherever he ended up and their kindness and caring hearts always made his day brighter.
Marlon is predeceased by his father, Charles G. Pool, his mother, Mary Frances Pool, his sister, Glenda Nowak, and his brother Gary C. Pool. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, children: Jared, Nathan, and Jessica, his grandchildren: Alivia, Ily, and Emory, and his brother Franz Pool, and his loyal dog, Tootsie.
