Linda Peters, 68, of Loves Park, passed away peacefully on November 29 after a brave and unwavering battle with cancer. Linda was a graduate of Guilford High School, Rock Valley College, Rockford College, and Walden University. From an early age, she showed great interest in science, math, music, art, literature, and poetry. Later, she was a familiar face at Charlotte’s Web. Her voice was used on a WLS commercial that aired for years. She taught guitar, mandolin, and banjo at Guzzardo Music in her early adult life while loving her young family. She wrapped up her teaching career at Jefferson High School where she continued to share her joy of math with students, with the occasional banjo performance. She was a Key Club advisor to future leaders and mentored young members of our community. She was very proud of her students and praised their attitudes and character. As a life-long nonconformist, she truly marched to the beat of her own drum and always tried to spread positivity and promote critical thinking. She rarely missed an opportunity to make a pun. Her goals often included making you smile. She persistently looked at the bright side of life.
Before stepping into her kayak and paddling out for life’s final moments, she enjoyed 46 years of marriage to her husband Howard. They met at Toad Hall by complete chance and created a life of their own. Together through their love they raised their son, Eli, and were later excited by the arrival of their grandchild, Elle. Her favorite activities included swimming at the YWCA, hiking, camping, traveling, volleyball, gardening, and paddling all the lakes and creeks. She enjoyed many of these activities with her friends and family and always loved a good adventure.
A small, outdoor memorial service will be planned for a warm spring day near a lake. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting a local charity, volunteering, or donating to Foundation for Women’s Cancer.
Compassion for the homeless, those with mental health conditions, victims of domestic violence, and animal welfare were also deeply important to her.
