Lee Burnell McGrew, born March 17, 1979, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, passed away on January 17, 2026, at his parents’ home in Freeport, Illinois. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Georgeanna McGrew; his sister, Heather (Michael) Dietmeier; his brother, Heath (Andrea) McGrew; his nephews, Keaton Coles and Jacob (Erin) McGrew; his niece, Taylor (Drake) Merrick; and his great-niece, Mia Merrick.
Lee was a highly skilled traveling machinist whose work took him many places and allowed him to form friendships wherever he went. A true social butterfly, he loved spending time with friends and family, watching football—especially cheering on the Chicago Bears—and enjoying a cold beer. Known affectionately as a “lovable big bear,”. Lee had an equally big heart and would help anyone in any way he could. He cherished the camaraderie of both friends and strangers alike, whether camping, tubing down rivers or simply sitting around a fire sharing stories. Lee’s warmth, generosity, and easygoing spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 7, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Neighbors Bar and Grill, located at 7745 Forest Hills Road, Loves Park, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary. Donations may be sent to Georgie McGrew, 1235 South Float Avenue, Freeport, Illinois 61032.
