Kathleen Marie Dunker, 74, of Sycamore passed away on June 16th, 2025. She is survived by her two boys, Jason and Michael, their spouses, and her brilliant granddaughter, Harper. She lived her life for her family, challenged the status quo, listened well, loved wine, traveled lightly, and gave sound advice.
She was born on November 3, 1950, to Irish Catholic parents and raised in the Broadview neighborhood of Chicago where she was an outspoken advocate for Civil Rights and from her experience working at Hines Hospital, was against the war in Vietnam. After graduating with honors from Immaculate High School in Westchester, she was awarded an academic scholarship to St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas and completed her education at Northern Illinois University eventually earning a CPA certificate.
Kath, Kathy, Dolly, or Dunk's mom is how she was known and was a fierce advocate for women's rights. She made countless donations to various charities, loved the film Sound of Music, and clicked thousands of miles on the Illinois Tollway System where she claimed, "they said they'd take out these tolls in 1973, yet here we are."
She will be remembered in small moments like when you peel the ears back on Dekalb corn or take that first sip of McDonald's Diet Coke. In her life, she loved meeting Barack Obama, walking the dunes at White Sands, and seeing both her son's graduate college & basic training. Her greatest joy came from eating Irish Soda bread with her granddaughter after their afternoon nap. In lieu of cards or flowers, please make a donation to Safe Passage Dekalb County (safepassagedv.org) in her name.
