October 10, 1956 — March 23, 2025

Joan Eileen Born

After surviving stage IV kidney cancer and living with renal failure for the past 5 years, Joan passed away at Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford, IL, on March 23rd, 2025. She was 68 years young. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dave Born and their only daughter, Katie "princess" Kern of Milwaukee, WI. She is also survived by sister Jane Jones of Arlington Heights, IL, and brother Jimmy Edstrom.

In addition to being an excellent mother, wife, sister, co-worker, neighbor, and friend; Joan is known for being a fabulous chef, hostess, gardener, boat captain, party planner, cheerleader, and dancer. She had an excellent sense of a humor and lit up every room she walked in. Joan always saw the good in situations. She loved music, cars, supperclubs, and a mean Manhattan.

Joan was born in Mount Prospect, IL, to mother Mary Ann and father Gene Edstrom. Joan graduated from Bradley University in 1978 where she was a proud member, and president, of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Joan met Dave when they were both working in downtown Chicago in the insurance business. Six months later, they were engaged and married in 1982. They started their married life in Detroit, then later moved to Cleveland, before returning to the western suburbs of Chicago to live closer to family and to start a family of their own. Between her roles at Prudential and Liberty Mutual, Joan worked in the insurance business for a total of 35 years.

A celebration of life is planned for Friday, May 2nd, 2025, at Hawk's View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, WI. Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice in her honor. Stateline Cremations is assisting the family, 6204 Forest Hills Rd., Loves Park, IL 61111. www.statelinecremations.com
