James Earl Nelson

December 8, 1972 — February 15, 2026

James Earl Nelson, 54, of Machesney Park, passed away on February 15, 2026. Known by his friends as the “Dog Father”. James graduated on May 27, 1994, from Harlem High School, which led him down the path to being a carpenter.

James was very close with his family, but his friends were like the family that would never go home. From sitting in the garage partying, listening to Pink Floyd to jamming out on the bass. Smoking the devil’s lettuce and eating good food. James was a lover of music and having a good time. James loved to be a jokester and often spent his time teasing and joking with his friends, in a fun way. Music was a big part of his life, but his dogs were like the kids he never had. They brought him the most joy and comfort.

James will be missed dearly by his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. He was the glue that held the family together and will never be forgotten as such, we will miss the spicy, fresh salsa and pizza in the middle of the night. The 1 AM phone calls about how he loved his way of life and would never change it.

James is survived by his sisters Helen Houser and Brenda Newhausen; brothers Frank Bachmeier and William “Ed” Nelson; nieces and nephews Chantel Talaba, Marrerro (Elmer) and children Trever Smith, Breanna (Michael) Bird and children Cuame Harriel and child. Johnny Bachmeier, Carrie Smith, Dylan Smith, Justin Hook, Phillip Hook. He was predeceased by his father William Nelson, mother Geraldine Nelson (Ortley), Lee Nelson, Sam Selma Hill, Rosella Hook, Michael Smith, Roseanne Hill, Vicki Martinez, and his beloved dogs Pepper, Penny, Brandy, Molly, Mia, and Izzy.

The family will announce a Celebration of Life later this year when the weather is warmer. Stateline Cremations is assisting the family, 6204 Forest Hills Rd., Loves Park, IL 61111. www.statelinecremations.com
