Gwendolyn “Gwen” L. Cunningham, 87, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on August 9th, 2026.
Gwen was born on December 11, 1938, in Rockford, IL to Fred W. and Ruth E. (Jewell) Zwiger. She graduated from West Senior High School and attended the Swedish American School of Nursing before beginning a long and dedicated career with the Winnebago County Health Department where she retired after 32 years as an Audio-Visual Technician. She built many lasting friendships and especially looked forward to their monthly retiree’s lunch.
She was a devoted mother to her two sons, David and Douglas Cox. She later met the love of her life, Raymond “Charlie” C. Cunningham where they shared 29 wonderful years together before his passing. Gwen lovingly helped raise Charlie’s two children, Karen R. Cunningham and Thomas G. Cunningham.
Her family and friends will forever miss her sense of humor, Sunday visits, watching Pretty Woman on repeat, and her daily texts that brightened so many lives.
Gwen is survived by her sister, Merelyn (Frank) Young; her brother, Fred Douglas (Renee) Zwiger; her stepson, Thomas G. Cunningham; her grandchildren, Bryanne, Kayla, Ruthie, Jenna, Peyton, and Neva; and, in her own words... her two “little pistols" (great-grandsons). She also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie; her sons, Davey and Doug; her stepdaughter, Karen; her sister, Jacquelyn (Roger) Fenelon; and her brothers William and Harold Dennis Zwiger.
