Greg of Lake Summerset, Davis, IL left his Soul Cage while the planets aligned on February 28. He was born in Rockford to Francis “Fritz” Wright and Maxine (Nicholas) Wright.
He grew up in the Rockford area, always by a river or lake where he could canoe or sail. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed many trips to Quetico and Boundary Waters. After graduation from Guilford, he married Vicky (Sender) Kinney, before courageously serving in the Navy during the Vietnam war.
After attending Rock Valley, he became a fireman as an engine driver where he retired after more than 33 years. He lived the family tradition of “Need for Speed” being a frequent spectator of Road America and by riding Harley Davidson, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, MG, Porsche and even go carts. After his stroke in 2023, it became difficult for him to enjoy his electric bike although he did manage to keep his electric wheelchair charged and geared for high speed. He spoke of fond memories about his travels to Jamaica as well as hauling his camper to the Mississippi River, Lake Superior with his dog Marley and visiting his son and grandson in Montana.
Greg stayed at home as long as possible with the incredible help from the United States Veteran Affairs and their home care program. When intensive needs were necessary, the collaboration of VA, Heartland Hospice and Amberwood was extremely comforting.
Greg is predeceased by his grandparents, Lyle and Mae Nicholas, and Taylor “Pee Wee” and Millie Wright; parents, Fritz and Maxine (Nicholas) Wright; brothers, Wayne, Chad and Barney; sister, Chris (Rippontrop) Wright. He is survived by daughter, Shannon (Bob Mlsna) Wright; son, Shane (Kirsten) Wright; grandchildren, Fiona Mlsna and Loyal Wright; nephews, Nicholas, (Rena) Wright; niece, Savana, (Ben Maio) Savage; sister-in-law, Selma, (Mike Savage) Wright, Pam Palmer; brother-in-law, Gary (Dee) Rippontrop; many friends and his entire fireman family.
Greg was a true warrior of living life to the max. We will have a celebration of his life in the near future.
