Gordon Arthur Weigle

April 16, 1942 — December 12, 2025

Gordon “Gordy” Arthur Weigle was born in Butler, PA on April 16, 1942, to the late William Arthur “Art” and Phyllis (Cumberland) Weigle. He died peacefully on December 12, 2025.
Gordon graduated in 1960 from Butler High School and served 4 years in the US AirForce before receiving his Physics degree from Slippery Rock University/Penn State.
Gordy described himself as an airplane nut. Beginning with model planes, building and flying radio control airplanes and then building a BD-4 kit airplane that survived five moves before completion. He was always happy to talk about his three planes-a Cessna 140, Piper Comanche, and the BD-4, and various flying adventures, especially during the years that he lived in Phoenix, AZ.

The highlight of his year was attending the EAA Air Show in Oshkosh, WI. He was a former member of the EAA Chapter 22, Ellis # 633 Mason Lodge, Tebala Shrine, and the Air Squadron Shrine Club, and long-time member of the Bethesda Covenant Church.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Susan (Harris) Weigle; daughter Joanne (Rick) Arroy; sons Alan (Melanie Standifer) Weigle, and Steven Weigle; grandchildren Forrest Arroy, David Weigle, James (Hailie) Murray, and Colin Standifer; sister Susan Engwer; and brother Kerry (Diane) Weigle. Predeceased by his parents; sister Patricia Krason; and brothers-in-law John Engwer and David Krason.

The family would like to thank Rockford VA Clinic, Madison, WI VA, and MercyHealth Hospice for their care.

There will be no local services. At Gordy’s request, his ashes will be scattered in Arizona.

High Flight
BY JOHN GILLESPIE MAGEE JR.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
