Edwin Paul Neubauer, a nearly life-long resident of Beloit, passed away on June 21, 2024, at the age of 92. Ed was born in South Beloit, the son of Paul H. Neubauer, a German immigrant and employee at the Beloit Iron Works. Following the death of his father when he was eight years old, his mother, Edith, and his four younger brothers moved to Mooseheart in Northern Illinois where he completed his schooling. He excelled at football and track while at Mooseheart. Following graduation, he enrolled at Beloit College. While at Beloit College he was a star offensive and defensive lineman and kicker for the Buccaneer Football team and threw the discus on the track team. His undergraduate sequence was interrupted as he served in the US Army at the end of the Korean War. He graduated from Beloit College in June of 1957. Post Beloit College, Ed attended Iowa State University, using his GI Bill, where he earned a Master’s degree in metallurgy. After earning his Master of Science Degree, he and his young family, Jane, sons Ken and Keith (Chip) and daughter Kathy, moved to Beloit where he worked for Beloit Corporation working as a troubleshooter on materials issues and a researcher at the Beloit Corporation Research Center in northern Illinois. Ed left Beloit Corporation as a result of company restructuring in 1970 when he purchased a sporting goods store on Pleasant Street, renaming the store “Neubauer’s Sporting Goods.” He later took on a sales position with Delong Sporting Goods and subsequently relocated to Crystal Lake, Ill. Ed retired back to Beloit later in his life and remained in his hometown until his passing. Ed was an active member of the First Congregational Church and sang in the choir for many years. He could be seen walking around town and was a regular customer at the Farmer’s Market well into his late eighties. He is survived and dearly missed by his son Kenneth Neubauer (Williamsburg, VA) and daughter Kathryn Landon (Beloit, WI). Donations can be made in his honor to the Beloit College Athletic Department, 700 College St., Beloit, WI 53511, Attention Leslie Beeler.
