Donald Smith

Donald Gene "Punk" Smith, 82, of Rockford, passed away suddenly on June 11, 2025, at UW Swedish American Hospital. He was born on June 13, 1942, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri; the son of Johnie Donnel and Christine Mary (Eldridge) Smith. He married Rita A. Cunningham on September 11, 1965. He worked as a machinist at Hyrdoline in Machesney Park for many years.

Don enjoyed watching movies, especially westerns with John Wayne and war movies. He loved woodworking and was always making something. He enjoyed fishing and prided himself in being a "Southerner". He was his happiest playing with "littles" in his family. He loved horseplay and joking around until someone got into trouble. He was dedicated to his family and friends. Don's grandchildren and great-grandchildren called him Punk.

Survivors include his children Kelly (David) Steinke, Kimberly Cortinas, and Donald (Natoshia) Smith; grandchildren Adam Teeters and Ryley Schultz, Ashley and Alexis Cortinas, Austen and Bailey (Robyn) McLain, and Haydin and Hannah Smith; great-grandchildren An'gela, Alonzo, Anthony, Serenity, Liam, Ari'ella, Isaiah, Kendall, Emelia, River, and Waylon; 2 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; wife Rita; granddaughter Angel; great-grandson Gabe; and brother James Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11am to 3 pm, Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Olson Farm Park, Swedish Heritage Shelter, 7901 Harlem Rd., Loves Park (Caledonia). Please bring a dish to pass. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks (non-alcoholic) will be provided. Stateline Cremations is assisting the family, 6204 Forest Hills Rd., Loves Park, IL 61111.
