Dilene Sue Simmons

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dilene Sue (Swinson) Simmons, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend. Dilene departed this world peacefully and without pain on September 24, 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born on December 30, 1947, in Isabella County, Michigan, where she spent her early years close to her late grandparents, Aunt Vivian and Uncle Seth, and her cousins, who will miss her dearly. She was the daughter of the late Gertrude (Robinson) and Lloyd Swinson.

At the age of two, she moved to Maple Park, IL, and then, at around 15, to Genoa, IL, where she graduated from high school. She enjoyed being included in the Kaneland class reunion and spending time with her Genoa classmates.

In 1970, Dilene married Jerry W. Simmons, Together, they celebrated more than 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2025.

She worked outside the home for Automatic Electric and later Motorola until she retired.

Dilene was named the 2024 Community Pride Award recipient by the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, an award that was well deserved and of which she and her family were very proud.

She spent countless hours in the sunshine and rain handing out flyers and selling poppies for veterans. As a member of the Women’s Auxiliary at the VFW, she made many fond memories at Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts, and Lightning Bingo, to name just a few. She was very proud of helping others and loved participating in hometown events.

Dilene is survived by her daughters Dawn (Dan) Capes, Doreen (Manuel) Simmons, and Denise Simmons; her son Dewayne (Jessica) Simmons; her son-in-law Patrick Christensen; her grandchildren Nicholas (Shannon) Capes, Devin, Reilly, Alex, Andrew, and Manuel Jr., who were all the light of her life; her brothers Criag and Larry (Donna) Swinson; her sister-in-law Lita Swinson; her sister Mary (Bill) Fraedrich; her longtime friend Rieann; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Also preceding her in death were her daughter Deena Christensen; son-in-law Karl; brothers Richard, Barry, Mark, and Brian; sister Debra; and great-niece Aelin Fraedrich.

Dilene will be remembered for her love of others, baking, movies, dancing in her younger days, the best fried chicken, potato salad, and so much more. She found joy and beauty in the world through helping others. Her grandchildren will remember and miss her dearly.

Some of their favorite memories were that Alex made her the best grilled cheese, Andrew loved her banana bread, and Manuel loved her peanut butter blossoms. Andres says she was the best grandma in the whole world. All her family have special memories they will keep close.

Her selflessness and generosity touched the lives of many, and her legacy of kindness will continue to inspire those who knew her. She was very proud of her family and friends and loved us all.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 pm, Sunday, October 25, 2025, at the Genoa VFW, 311 S. Washington St., Genoa, IL 60135.

A private graveside service will be held for the family.

Dilene was a beacon of love, strength, and integrity. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
