David Eugene Dunham, 79, of Rockford, Illinois passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Wesley Willows from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. David was born on April 18, 1941 to Blanche (Wilson) and Floyd George Dunham in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dave graduated from McCordsville High School and Wabash College and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from Ohio University. He taught chemistry at Monmouth College (Illinois), Ohio State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then worked for Varian Associates Analytical Instruments as North American Customer Support and Field Training Manager before starting his own consulting firm. He valued education highly and was richly rewarded by his work with students of all ages. Dave loved intellectual challenges and enjoyed playing bridge and euchre with friends and family. He was an avid reader, especially science fiction, and was a real “Mr. Fix-It.” He could often be found at his basement work table repairing a lamp cord, a hair dryer—you name it. His shirt-pocket full of pens was a source of fascination for our young grandchildren when they sat on his lap. Dave and Jan were active members of Arlington Squares square dance club where they enjoyed many great times with dear friends. Dave volunteered with the PADS emergency shelter program in Arlington Heights. He also served as a University of Illinois Extension Council Member in Boone County and as an election judge. Dave leaves behind his wife of 48 wonderful years, Jan Dysert Dunham; children, Matthew (Lynda) Dunham, Andy (Kathy) Dunham, Ben (Margaret) Andrew; Grandchildren, Jennifer Dunham, Melissa Dunham, Eric (Sara) Dunham, Kevin (Katie) Dunham, Caitlyn (Josiah) Bennett, Scott (Erin) Dunham, Alec Dunham, Quincey Dunham, Rachel Dunham; 5 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eileen Dunham; brothers-in-law, John Rahe, Larry (Mary) Dysert; several nieces and nephews. Dave was preceded in death by parents, Blanche and Floyd Dunham; brother, George Dunham; sister, Patricia Rahe. ? The family would like to extend their gratitude to Kirk’s Place, who lovingly cared for Dave during the past year.
