Corey Carter

June 15, 1984 — May 10, 2025

Corey Lynn Carter, 40, of Scarboro, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2025, as a result of a motorcycle accident, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born on June 15, 1984, to Kimberly Savage and Ricky Carter, Corey lived a life filled with passion and joy. A proud graduate of Rochelle Township High School in 2002, he went on to earn his certification in Automotive & Truck Technology from Universal Technical Institute in Glendale Heights, Illinois in 2004. He was a volunteer firefighter at the Steward Fire Dept until moving to Scarboro. He was a man of many passions, a skilled mechanic, motorcycle enthusiast, an avid fisherman, and a true lover of the outdoors, and most importantly, a devoted father. Corey had an infectious personality – he was outgoing, stubborn, funny, hardheaded, kind, and always there to lend a helping hand. All traits that were part of his unique charm and tenacity.

Corey was known for his mechanical expertise, building and repairing vehicles with precision and care. His hands could fix anything, from a sputtering engine to a broken snowmobile or motorcycle. He found great joy in riding his motorcycle – the open road always calling to him. He was equally passionate about fishing, spending countless hours – day or night – at a lake, reeling in catches and sharing stories with friends and family. He always said he found himself called to the water and enjoyed kayaking and boating with his children and friends. But more than anything else, Corey was a loving and supportive father. Whether he was in the stands during marching band, on the sidelines during football season, mat-side for wrestling, or front row for every band concert. His children truly were his greatest pride and joy.

Corey is survived by his children Laeyla & Brock Carter of Machesney Park; his mother & stepfather, Kim & Cliff Lancaste of Steward; his brothers, Bret Shawl of Rochelle & Andrew Shawl (Devlyn Bundock) of Davis Junction; his grandparents, Jerry & Jackie Davis of Frakes, KY and Dennis Savage of Shabbona; aunt Toni Savage of Rochelle; uncle Randy Savage of Rochelle; mother of his children, Rhiannon Haeffner of Machesney Park; niece & nephew, Savannah & Sebastian; cousins, Micheal Schorsch, Stacey Savage (Steve Schweizer) and Cara Schweizer of DeKalb, and Megan (Joel) Savage of Wisconsin; step-siblings Samantha, Carl, & Cliff Jr.; friends that became family along the way; and many, many more friends and family; he also leaves behind his beloved fur buddy, Diesel.

He was reunited in Heaven with his father, Ricky Carter; beloved father figure and role model, Mark "Mitch" Mitchell; and his stepson Chad "Chaddy" Shaw, Jr. who all welcomed him home with open arms.

The family will announce a celebration of life once the arrangements have been made.

In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been created to help Laeyla & Brock with a memorial and to honor their father. https://gofund.me/7c938a31
