Carl Harvey Burchett, 96, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, in his home in Rockford, Illinois. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 14, 1929 (we blamed him for the great depression), the son of Wilbur and Aubrey (Harvey) Burchett and grew up in Rochelle, IL.
Dad honorably served in the Army in WWII, enlisting while still in high school and in the Air Force in the Korean War. He married Wilma “Willie” Sanner on January 16, 1954, and they celebrated their 71 years of marriage just 3 days prior to her passing in January last year.
Dad worked in purchasing at John S. Barnes for over 40 years. On weekends he could be found rummaging through garage sales all over Rockford and selling his treasures, often beautifully refurbished, at flea markets in the area. Mom and Dad taught 4 & 5 year-olds in Sunday School for 45 years at Central Christian Church in Rockford where they have been a part of the Church family for 66 years. Upon retirement, they took many trips around the world, spent winters in Surfside Beach, near Myrtle Beach, and he helped “Willie” who babysat hundreds of children over more than 40 years at “Willie’s Happy House.”
He is survived by his children Steve (Andie) Burchett of Geneva, IL and Deb Burchett of Rockford. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughters, Becci (Nick) Gauna of Oak Park, IL, Taylor Lowry of Geneva, IL, Mackenzie Burchett of Geneva, IL and beloved great-grandchildren Julian and Isabelle Gauna, Taft, Meyer and Wells Lowry and special caretaker Femi. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Wilma, and siblings Miles Burchett, Virginia Hann, John Burchett, Norma Christiansen and Cleo Apple.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, with visitation at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM at Central Christian Church, 6595 Guilford Rd., Rockford, IL 61107, with luncheon following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Christian Church or Carpenter’s Place, both of Rockford, in the name of Carl Burchett.
