Betty McGee was born on August 2, 1940, in Colorado Springs, CO, the daughter of Blanche and George Robinson, and passed away peacefully on Jan 13, 2024. She graduated from Colorado Springs High School and attended the University of Colorado, graduating with a B. A. in English and Education, in 1962. She and Larry met in the clarinet section of the U of C band: they married on December 22, 1962, in Colorado Springs.
Betty taught math, English and German in Middle and High Schools,
especially connecting with the middle school students, prior to the birth of Scott, Brad, and Greg. After they reached high school, she attended Rock Valley College to become a technical writer, an outgrowth of her interest in journalism. She then worked at Election Systems and Software in Rockford, writing their user manuals.
She was an excellent cook and made and decorated cookies and cakes, much to the satisfaction of our family. She enjoyed knitting, playing board and card games, potluck/bridge clubs with friends, Coronado concerts and local stage plays and entertainers. She was active in organizing and
participating in school activities. One of her major enjoyments was watching her sons and grandsons participate in school and team sports. She became a dedicated Cubs fan and passed that love of baseball on to her sons and grandsons.
Her ideal vacation was to stay in the mountain cabin which her parents built in Southern Colorado or to have the luxuries of a nice hotel or cruise ship. She enjoyed traveling and was able to visit almost all the United States, southern Canada, and some western European countries.
Betty was an ardent advocate for Greg, volunteering at Page Park School, participating in Barbara Olson Center of Hope and Milestone activities and keeping on top of the latest medical information on Cerebral Palsy. For many years she was on the board of The ARC of Winnebago, Boone and Ogle County.
She enjoyed a life of purpose and dedication. Sadly, dementia slowly stole these from her. Our family wishes to thank the staff at TLC, Azura and Agrace for giving her the ability to live reasonably comfortably to enjoy an extended family life.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and son, Scott. She is survived by her husband, Larry; sons, Brad (Trista) and Greg; grandsons, David and Matthew McGee (Scott and Nancy) and Cole and Conner McGee (Brad and Trista); sisters-in-law, Marilyn Baker and Cheryl Borchardt (Lee); and many nieces and nephews.
Her ashes will be scattered at our Colorado cabin. To celebrate her life and love, she asked that donations may be made in honor of Greg McGee at Milestone, Inc., 4060 McFarland Road, Loves Park IL 61111.
